MISSION STATEMENT

To preserve the history of the Town of Valley Head, DeKalb County Alabama, and the history of the families who settled the area known as the head of Wills Valley.

“…to approach every historical claim with a critical eye and ear.  But even when oral sources exaggerated or distorted the past, they provided a drama lost to written records, a notion of how it really was to be alive then and share the anger or the sense of hopelessness- or maintain dogged determination.”  Wayne Flynt  Poor But Proud, Alabama’s Poor Whites, 1989 University of Alabama Press

  1. Thank you for sharing all this information. I’m the great granddaughter of Eulis B Hicks and trying to find more information on her ancestry. I was told she was full Cherokee. Anything you can share would be greatly appreciated.

    Blessings

    1. If there is a Cherokee ancestor it may be: Martha Pack was born on 12 Jun 1810 in
TN who married William Jacob Beene.
Native American is not easy to trace, only DNA can tell. Elizabeth Pack was
a prominent resident of Valley Head and Wills Valley, said to be Cherokee. Could
be that Martha Pack is the connection.

  2. This is in reference to Ellis notes regarding Troxtel stories about Robert E. Lee and Cherokee. I am a Troxtel. My father, E. F. Troxtel, was born in Valley Head. He was born in 1922. I grew up hearing variations on the same stories… related to Robert E. Lee (but my mother said it was just a coincidence because the family related Robert E. Lee was actually a farmer, married, who took up with a young woman with the last name Troxtel. She traveled on foot, alone, from another state, until the Lee family took her in. Lee and the woman had children. As he was married, the children had the last name Troxtel, not Lee). Personally, I always liked the story of the lone female traveler. She was strong, independent, and fearless.

I also heard about Cherokee hiding in Sequoia Caverns during the Trail of Tears march, so the Troxtel’s are supposed to have Cherokee lineage.

Another story was about an Indian Princess called Cornblossom who married Jacob Troxtel (although an internet search states the name as Troxel or Troxell. Interestingly, the original old spelling of the Troxtel/Troxel/Troxell name was Trachsel.) The Cornblossom story involved a massacre where Cornblossom died. The massacre was supposed to have occurred in Kentucky, but the Troxtel in the story was tied to DeKalb County, as well as Sand Mountain in North Georgia.

Yet another story tells about a rather nasty Troxtel who was a carpet bagger. He was known as Scalping Jake Troxtel. I am not sure if any of the tales are true, but one of my aunts worked on the Troxtel genealogy and she found much of the above information during her research. We thought Scalping Jake was a particularly colorful character.

    1. I am interested in hearing more about the Troxtel woman in your story. My ancestor was Jane C Troxtel. She had 5 children fathers unknown and never married. Jane was associated with and lived close to the Allen Lea family. Her daughter Margaret was my great grandmother. Margaret’s second husband was Walter Lea. Do you have more info?

  3. Is anyone that uploaded pictures in the Crow gallery able to name some of the pictures for me? I am a decsendent of Joseph C Crow. My grandparents were Thurman Haney and Edith Crow.
    Thank you

  4. Reta Troxtel I just read your comment about the Troxtel woman that travelled on foot from another state and had children out of wedlock. My ancestor was Jane Troxtel. She had 5 children with unknown fathers and never married. She was neighbors and associated with Allen Lea family. Her daughter Margaret Troxtel Wade’s 2nd marriage was to Walter Lea. My mother was a Wade. Is this your family? Do you have more info on the above story?

    1. Relation: Elizabeth Blevins “Troxel” is my third great grand aunt, she married George Jacob “Troxel”. Reference Wade: Docia Anola Wade, 1877-1954, was the mother of my former father-in-law, Jasper W. (Jack) Hartline, 1918-1999. I have some old pictures labled Troxtel, but have no idea thier first names. I will try to email to you maybe you can tell me who they are.
Jane Troxtel and her beginnings are some what confusing. Depending to the researcher, you get different information. I find Jane C. “Troxell” in the 1860 Census, Valley Head, DeKalb Co., Al, in the house hold of Samuel Thomas, age 75 born in Va., and Louisa Thomas age 25, born in Tn. I believe Louisa was a Troxtel. In the 1850 Census Valley Head, AL, listed an Elizabeth “Troxel” age 58, born in NC, with children Eliza, age 17, born in Tn, and Jane, age 3, born in Al. Jane, age 3, is probably the daughter of Eliza.
John C McCain (Rootsweb.com) list Elizabeth maiden name as Blevins. It appears that Eliza Louisa Troxell married Samuel Thomas about 1856, because also listed is a male, 13, Washington Troxell and a male, 3, Samuel H. Thomas.
According to Charles Austin (Rootsweb.com, 2000) Elizabeth was married to George Jacob Troxell, probably before 1830, probably in TN.

  5. I am the great x 2 granddaughter of Dovey Shankles. Seaborn’s 2nd marriage yielded my great grandpa, Loyd, who had my grandpa, Mancil, who I was very fond of.

This journey led me here, for which I am very thankful, and would love any additional info on Milligan or Dovey. This is where my search stops. I can’t find more further back.

Do you happen to have next generations? I mean, since we’re family and all…

Thanks so much for all of this!
