Where That Lewis Girl Went
|
|
She went to Tennessee. First to Tipton County then to Marion. To track her it was necessary to spell her first name right. Since her parents, Jonathan and Nancy Steele Lewis weren’t around to ask, I had to gather the various spellings and search, search, search. Serene Lewis was born 1852 in DeKalb County, Alabama. Her name has been spelled: Cyrene; Seroney; Serina; and annotated on some census as simply S. C. Serene Lewis married Samuel Cook March 14, 1871 in DeKalb County, Alabama and soon afterward they moved to Tipton County Tennessee. They were there for the 1880 census with five children: Emma, S. E. (daughter), Samuel, Columbus, and a two month old daughter yet to be named. They were living next to her sister Cansada Lewis Pinkham and her family. By 1900, Serene’s husband, Samuel Columbus Cook, had passed away and Serene with five children had moved to Marion County. The children listed on 1900 census were: Sam, Bill, Rolin, Josie, and Paul. Emma had married J. M. Vittetoe and was living in Early County, Georgia. At the age of 57, “Serina” was living with her son J. Roland Cook and his family in South Pittsburg, Tennessee. It is said that her son, Sam Cook, died in Texas. There is a Columbus Cook, who could be the son, living in Eastland County, Texas, very near a sister of Serene’s, “Crecy” Lewis Blackwell. |
